The Beachy Head Marathon is returning this weekend, and for drivers in the area there are a few road closures to keep in mind.

Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon the event is popular for its scenic and challenging route through the South Downs National Park countryside.

Alongside the marathon event, there will also be a 10k route, a half marathon and an ultra marathon, which will encompass the marathon and 10k route.

The marathon, ultra and 10k runs will take place on Saturday, October 21 whilst the half marathon will occur on Sunday, October 22.

A number of road closures will be in place on those two days, so here's what drivers should know ahead of the event.

Beachy Head Marathon 2023 road closures

The event organisers for the Beachy Head Marathon have stated a number of roads will be shut between 5.30am and 7pm on October 21 and between 5.30am and 2.30pm on October 22.

The roads that will be shut on those days for the marathon are listed below:

  • King Edward’s Parade - From its junction with Dukes Drive to its junction with Chesterfield Road
  • Dukes Drive - From its junction with Cliff Road to its junction with Wellcombe Crescent
  • Upper Dukes Drive - Part carriageway closure from its junction with Beachy Head Road to its junction with Wellcombe Crescent (access maintained for residents). Access maintained in opposite direction. 
  • Holywell Road - From its junction with Cliff Road to its junction with Dukes Drive (residential access maintained)

Additionally, on October 21 there will be some road closures between 7am and 3pm in the villages of Litlington and Alfriston, which are:

  • Litlington Road, Litlington (from the junction with the Friston Forest Car Park)
  • The Street, Litlington
  • Star Lane, Alfriston (from the High Street to the property known as The Star Pub car park)
  • North Street, Alfriston (from the junction with Sloe Lane to the junction of Weavers Lane)

Time limits for the event are nine hours for the ultra and regular marathon, four hours for the half marathon and two hours for the 10k.
