A teenager who was stabbed to death on his way to the station tried to run but collapsed, a court has heard.

The inquest into the death of Mustafa Momand, 17, opened at Woodvale Coroner’s Court, Brighton, this morning.

The court heard how the 17-year-old was stabbed in Queen’s Road, Brighton, on October 5. He was on his way to the station.

The 17-year-old tried to run but collapsed.

An ambulance arrived and was transferred to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Despite treatment, he died later that day.

The teenager, of Temple Road, Croydon, was formally identified by his mother Suraya Momand.

On October 7, a post-mortem declared his provisional cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.

Assistant coroner Gareth Jones opened and suspended the inquest today.

“Bearing in mind he died with a stab wound to his chest I have reason to suspect his death was not natural,” said Mr Jones.

“However bearing in mind a 16-year-old has been charged, I suspend the inquest to allow a murder trial to take place.”

The inquest has been suspended until April 16, 2024.
