Motorists are facing severe delays along the A259 due to roadworks on the A27.
The highway is closed eastbound near Lewes, from A27 Brighton Road to A26 Southerham roundabout, until the early hours of Monday morning.
A diversion is in place via the A277 Brighton Road through Lewes, the A2029 Phoenix Causeway and the A26 Cuilfail Tunnel.
The closure, due to structural works, has caused severe delays along the A259 between Rottingdean and Newhaven.
Delays along the coast are reported to be around one hour as a result of the closure.
Congestion has had a knock-on effect on some bus services, with Brighton and Hove Buses warning of changes and delays to its Rgency and Coastal routes.
Bus tickets are being accepted on Southern Rail services between Brighton, Lewes, Newhaven and Seaford, as well as between Lewes and Eastbourne, due to the disruption.
National Highways have urged motorists to allow extra time for journeys as a result of the congestion.
