A burning smell and “loud bangs” were reported from the kitchen of an 18th century hotel.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue reported that crews were investigating at the Powdermill Hotel this afternoon after the burning smell was reported by members of the public.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed that crews were investigating but the incident was not believed to be serious.

An ESFRS spokeswoman added: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.53pm today to reports of the smell of burning and loud bangs from the kitchens at Powdermill Hotel, Powdermill Lane, Battle.

“As of 5.30pm crews are on scene and investigating.

“Everyone has been accounted for and the premises have been evacuated.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.”

The Powdermill hotel is an 18th century building which was previously used as a gunpowder mill. The mill became conspicuous after allegedly supplying Guy Fawkes for the gunpowder plot.

The house was bought in 1982 and is now a hotel and fine dining restaurant.
