A trade union has called behaviour at a bin depot “entirely unacceptable” after racism, sexism and homophobia were claimed to be rampant.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s Hollingdean Bin Depot was hit by scandal after “routine” discrimination was uncovered by an independent investigation.

Now, the GMB Union which represents workers at the depot have responded, adding that they were “deeply concerned” by the allegations.

A GMB spokesman added: ““GMB is deeply concerned about the allegations made in this summary report.

“The language and behaviours stated are entirely unacceptable. Individuals who are the subject of these allegations must be given the opportunity to provide their response, which should be reflected in the final full report from Brighton and Hove City Council.

“In recent years, we have delivered a comprehensive process of positive change that has transformed our union.

"When incidents are identified that do not meet expected standards, we take firm action.

The independent report by Aileen McColgan KC uncovered multiple incidents of racist graffiti, derogatory sexual remarks towards female management and staff shunning gay co-workers.

Ms McColgan KC also said that trade unions had threatened industrial action when attempts were made to discipline individuals.

Council Leader Bella Sankey said that the report “paints a picture of a service mired in racism, misogyny and homophobia”.

She added: “Brighton and Hove City Council must be an organisation which has zero tolerance for bullying, aggression, racism, misogyny and homophobia. This is essential for staff to feel safe, respected and supported and for our council to deliver the high-quality services that residents deserve and expect.

"As the new council Leader, the buck stops with me. I will ensure that once we’ve completed necessary legal processes, the full report and recommendations are published and that we now take appropriate action to address the report’s findings for our staff and residents.”

A full report into the culture within the bin depot will be released at the end of the month.

People named within the report will be given the chance to respond to the allegations before it is made public.
