Dates for a plea hearing and a provisional trial have been set for a 16-year-old boy accused of murdering another teenager in the city centre.
The boy, from Southwick, will appear in Lewes Crown Court for a formal plea hearing and trial preparation on December 1.
A provisional trial date has been set for February 19 next year.
The teenager is accused of killing 17-year-old Mustafa Momand in Queen’s Road, Brighton, during rush hour at around 5pm last Thursday, October 5.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, nodded as Judge Jeremy Gold KC explained the next stages to him in Hove Crown Court this morning.
He was wearing a grey jumper, trousers and had a hoodie draped over his shoulders.
The defendant’s family and a friend were sitting in the public gallery.
Bernard Tetlow, defending, said that it is likely that they will have a psychiatric assessment for the defendant.
Mustafa was said to have run up Queen’s Road and collapsed on the pavement. Passersby jumped to try and save him until paramedics arrived.
Police officers got to the scene where paramedics were treating Mustafa. The court heard that there “was a lot of blood on the floor”.
Mustafa was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital by road ambulance, where he died.
