A city centre road has reopened following a stabbing overnight which left a man in hospital.

The attack happened in the early hours of this morning in Trafalgar Street, Brighton.

A 22-year-old man is in hospital with “significant injuries”.

The road was closed for around eight hours and reopened at midday.

Here is what we know so far

Sussex Police were called at 3.50am to reports of a stabbing and a man was taken to hospital with significant injuries.

There were drops of blood on the pavement, as well as a blood-stained hoodie and first aid kit at the scene.

A shopkeeper at a nearby off-licence said neighbours “heard a commotion” at around 3am.

He added: “I opened my shop at 7am and there were four police cars here."

A forensic investigator arrived at around 10.15am.

Evidence markers were laid out across the street and evidence was bagged up and photographs taken.

Passersby spoke of their shock to see another incident soon after the tragic death of 17-year-old Mustafa Momand who was stabbed last Thursday, October 6.

"We hear stories about this in London. I suppose it can happen anywhere but I think it is very scary”, said one passerby who lives and works in Brighton.

“It’s scary this is happening in Brighton. I think about my kids going out. You never know who you can meet.

“Someone was hurt, badly injured. Hopefully they are okay.”

People walking to and from the railway station had to divert via nearby roads while the cordon was in place.

The road reopened at midday.

No arrests have been made yet.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are carrying out extensive searches in the area and the public can expect to see a heightened police presence while enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with any information is asked to report it online or via 101 quoting 162 of 09/10.”
