Most of the city’s public toilets will remain open throughout the winter, the council has revealed.

Winter opening hours for Brighton and Hove’s public toilets began on Sunday, with most being open from 8am until 4pm, except for some busier sites.

Toilets at Stanmer Village and Queen's Park, which were closed last year by Brighton and Hove City Council, will remain open this winter.

Toilets at Shelter Hall, the Colonnade, West Pier Arches and King's Road playground will remain open until 6pm, the council has said.

Four sites will still close over the winter and reopen in the spring; Daltons, Greenleas, Hollingbury Park and Black Rock.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, chairman of the council’s city environment, South Downs and the sea committee, said: “We’re keeping most of our public toilets open throughout winter and as usual, moving into winter opening hours so we can keep as many facilities open as possible.

“Public toilets at Greenleas and Black Rock have some ongoing maintenance issues that we’re going to work on over winter to reopen next spring.”

Toilets at Royal Pavilion Gardens and The Level remain closed while the council considers options to reopen them.

From today, people can use toilets in the foyer of the Brighton Dome as an alternative, which will be open from 9.45am to 5.15pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Cllr Rowkins said: “We’re determined to get the toilets at The Level open as soon as possible and are currently working on plans to make this happen.”

Vandalism has forced the closure of a cubicle at Queen's Park, with the council pledging to reopen it to the public as soon as possible.

“It’s incredibly disheartening to see the violent criminal damage at Queen's Park, just one month since the other cubicle was also vandalised,” Cllr Rowkins said.

“We’ve asked our maintenance team to prioritise the repair and hope to reopen the cubicle shortly.

“We’d ask anybody that has information about the vandalism at Queen's Park to contact us so that we can pass it on to the police.”
