Search crews have been spotted in a rescue mission after reports of a "swimmer in difficulty".
Members of search and rescue teams as well as a coastguard helicopter took part in the emergency response this afternoon after being called to Worthing Beach around midday.
The Argus understands that a coastguard helicopter arrived at the scene at around 1.45pm this afternoon.
A coastguard spokeswoman has since confirmed that the call was a false alarm.
The spokeswoman added: "HM Coastguard received a 999 call just before 12:15pm reporting a swimmer potentially in difficulty in the water off Worthing.
"Coastguard rescue teams from Shoreham and Littlehampton, Shoreham lifeboat, Worthing beach office personnel and a coastguard search a rescue helicopter was sent.
"After thorough searches and investigations, it was concluded that there were no persons missing."
