Hotel guests have been allowed back into a historic seaside hotel after reports of “smoke” and “fire” in the building.

The Doubletree by Hilton Brighton Metropole was evacuated after smoke was reported on the sixth floor of the building with firefighters flooding the scene.

Ten fire engines were at the scene of the incident alongside Sussex Police as guests waited patiently outside the historic building before being allowed back in just before 1pm.

One hotel guest said: “We’re here to DJ at the Boundary festival and we were staying here.

“I was sat listening to music and a firefighter opened my door and told me the building was on fire.

“We got here last night and now we’ve been out here for a couple of hours.”

Guests waited outside as firefighters from across Sussex set up a cordon around the front of the building.

Sections of the A259 were also blocked by the emergency response with traffic building on the Brighton seafront road.

A Sussex Police spokesman previously said that “fire” had been reported at the building and that all guests had been evacuated.

No smoke could be seen coming from the building as onlookers watched the incident.

The fire scare comes just months after the Royal Albion Hotel went up in flames and has since been partly demolished due to the extent of the damage.

The Hilton Metropole boasts a storied history having stood on Brighton’s seafront since the 19th century and attracting guests from across the world.

The hotel was rebranded earlier this year with owners Hilton bringing the site under the wing of its Doubletree brand.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the call was a "false alarm".
