One hundred lucky people will be able to enjoy free smashed burgers and chips at a restaurant tomorrow.

Honest Burgers in Duke Street, Brighton, will be open from 11.30am tomorrow and offering lunch to people on a first come first served basis.

The restaurant will be selling 4,000 smashed burgers and chips across its 40 different stores.

The deal is part of the restaurant chain’s crowdfunding campaign to move into the fast food sector as it expands.

Tom Barton, co-founder of Honest Burgers, said: “We started in a marquee, in a muddy field, mostly in the rain. It’s fair to say, we never dreamed we’d get to where we are today.

“One thing for sure is we wouldn’t have got here without our loyal customers. So we wanted to give them the opportunity to become co-owners of the brand as we set up for the next chapter in our story. And nothing says thank you better than a free burger.

“We’ve been totally overwhelmed with the response to our crowdfunding campaign and we’re super excited that our customers can join us for the next stage of our adventure.”

As part of the free 4,000 burgers initiative, one customer will also win a “golden shares” prize. The winner will receive £5,000 worth of shares in Honest Burgers.

Honest Burgers' move into fast food will serve smashed burgers, its rosemary salted chips, other sides and milkshakes as it “challenges bigger brands in the market in a set-up built for speed, convenience and exceptional value for money”.

A smashed burger is named because the beef is chopped rather than minced - as it “holds in the flavour and keeps the meat coarse and tender”. It is then "smashed" directly onto the grill.

Honest says their Smashed Burger cooks in fewer than two minutes and offers a lighter, lower calorie burger which is an ideal lunch option.
