The University of Sussex has been ranked among the best in the region.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 named it the fifth best university in the South East.

Nationally, it placed 48th.

It was also good news for other universities in the county.

The University of Chichester came 7th in the South East and 53rd nationally, while the University of Brighton came 13th in the South East and 87th nationally.

A University of Sussex spokesman said: "We are pleased to see the University of Sussex ranked in the top five universities in the South East in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, which is up one place on last year. Across all regions, we have risen two places.

“We are committed to further improving the experience of our students. Work is underway to provide new campus accommodation, more study spaces, a new supermarket, café and a Health and Wellbeing Centre. Along with our recently opened new student centre, these developments are set to further enrich the experience of students at Sussex.”

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain.

It includes the profiles of 134 universities, making use of the latest data published in the past two months.

Institutions are ranked on various factors, including graduate employment and teaching quality.

Helen Davies, editor of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “The higher education landscape has never been tougher. It is more competitive to get a place at many of our top institutions; the cost of attending university has soared, leaving graduates with extraordinary debt; and in many cases campus life still bears the scars of the pandemic. Meanwhile lecturers are on strike and the marking crisis is a running scandal.

“It means any prospective student, parent or carer needs to think hard about whether university is the right choice, and then where to study and what subject. It’s where this guide — our 30th edition — is here to help.”
