A man suffered serious injuries in a car crash after a motorist reportedly performed an emergency stop.
The collision happened on a high-speed section of the A22 near Uckfield.
The man's car ended up in a ditch by the side of the road after he swerved in a bid not to hit the vehicle that had stopped.
The wife of the injured driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "He slammed on the brakes but he must have known he was going to go in the back of the car. He swerved to avoid it but clipped the back end of the car and ricocheted off the wheel.
“The car started catching on fire and a member of the public in a bin lorry pulled him out of the car."
The man was transferred to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he remains having suffered serious spinal injuries.
