Trains towards Chichester were halted after an “unexploded wartime bomb” was reported near the tracks.
Emergency services were called to the scene between Havant and Chichester.
Trains were diverted or suspended as a safety measure.
The area was later deemed safe by emergency services and lines were re-opened but trains are still delayed following the incident.
A Southern Rail spokesman said: “The emergency services are currently dealing with an incident. They've received reports of an unexploded wartime bomb in the area between Havant and Chichester near the railway.
“Train services are being altered to allow the emergency services to attend and investigate the issue.”
Trains were initially suspended between Portsmouth and Littlehampton. Lines have since reopened.
Sussex Police were approached for comment.
