Former Green Party leader Sian Berry will run for re-election to the London Assembly next year, despite being selected to stand in Brighton Pavilion at the next general election.

Ms Berry was selected last month as the Green candidate for the party’s only seat in Parliament to try and replace Caroline Lucas, who is standing down at the next election.

However, she has said that she plans to re-stand as a member of the London Assembly at the next election next year if she has not become an MP by then.

While the next London Assembly election will take place on May 2, the next general election could be held as late as January 2025.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Ms Berry said: “If there has been an election to Parliament and I’ve become an MP, then obviously I wouldn’t seek to keep my current job as well.

“But while I haven’t got a different job to do, representing people, I’m going to keep representing the people of London.”

Ms Berry, who has run to be Mayor of London three times, has served on the London Assembly since 2016.

She also has served for almost a decade as a councillor in the London Borough of Camden.

In an interview with The Argus last month, Ms Berry said that she would step down as a member of the London Assembly if elected an MP.

She said: “They are both full-time jobs. I’ve been a councillor and a London Assembly member and those two jobs work together, but I would be the MP and that’s it.”

Ms Berry was chosen by Brighton and Hove Green Party members last month, winning 71 per cent of votes.

Caroline Lucas announced in June that she would stand down at the next general election in order to focus more on “the existential challenges that drive me - the nature and climate emergencies”.

The Labour Party is expected to attempt to win the constituency for the first time since 2005.

Although the party has not selected its candidate for the next election, comedian Eddie Izzard has announced she will throw her hat in the ring to contest the seat.
