A day out in Brighton is never really complete without a trip to the chippy.
Fish and chips on the pebbles as the sun sets is one of the finest things in life, but finding a good takeaway can be hard.
So The Argus has put together a handy guide of the best chip shops in our city, according to Tripadvisor. Your personal favourite might not have made the list - give it a shout-out in the comments below.
1. Captains, Madeira Drive
Topping the list of Brighton’s best spots for fish and chips, Captains is just a stone’s throw from the sea making it a beautiful spot for a bite to eat.
One person said on Tripadvisor: “It was divine, not greasy, light crispy batter and proper chips - a lot of them.
“Really can’t fault Captains it ticked all the boxes: great food, nice location, excellent customer service. I definitely recommend. Come hungry, you won’t be disappointed.”
Excellent reviews: 460 out of 578 reviews.
2. Bardsley’s, Baker Street
Tucked away in Baker Street near The Level, this is a chippy that city residents would probably prefer and is kept a secret.
But with Bardsley’s perfecting the recipe of crispy batter and succulent fish, that’s not likely.
“Some of the best, meaty, moist white fish with great batter,” said one reviewer.
“Chips were also very good and the portion size was great. Our waitress was, Bev, had a bit of banter and chat which made the experience even better.”
Excellent reviews: 270 out of 427 reviews.
3. The No Catch Company, Kings Road
Vegan fish and chips in the heart of the city. How could we ignore No Catch – it’s Brighton after all.
Opening just two years ago, this vegan chippy is taking vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters by storm.
“I can't even describe how good the food is, for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters,” said one person.
“We ordered chips, a battered saveloy, cod and calamari and everything blew us away.”
Guilt-free fish and chips. Lovely stuff.
Excellent reviews: 60 out of 70 reviews.
4. RYKBA, Meeting House Lane
Dubbed “The Michelin of fish and chips”, Rykba is another gem hidden away, this time in The Lanes.
This no-nonsense chippy uses fresh fish daily and the prices vary each day depending on what they’ve had delivered and its size. Nice.
One person said on Trip Advisor: “This is easily one of the best fish and chips I ever had, really fresh and crispy fish with lovely chips.
“Great atmosphere too, at the heart of the lanes, we were lucky to be sitting outside in a sunny day.”
Excellent reviews: 50 out of 60 reviews.
5. Athena B, Station Road
Away from the hubbub of the city centre, Athena B in Portslade is a proper chippy. Owner Mary took over the business in 1996 and has been frying ever since.
Every chip is peeled and chipped on site, tartare sauce is made in-house, and the fish is sustainably sourced. And it shows.
“We were recommended to try this place and it didn’t disappoint. Very reasonably priced and great selection on offer,” said one reviewer.
“The chips were fluffy as they should be, the fish all white and crispy batter, sausage in batter spot on and peas and tartar sauce really good.”
Excellent reviews: 45 out of 62 reviews.

6. Bankers, Western Road
Everyone in Brighton has had a Bankers, and everyone has had it more than once.
The Lipscombe family have been in the fish and chip game since 1923 when Harold opened the first shop opened in Romford.
Now, a hundred years on, Harold’s grandson Hugh is the CEO of Bankers and still working to ensure each portion of fish and chips that goes out is delicious.
“I had some friends in town from the UK and we decided to make the trip out there,” one person said.
“Let me tell you, it was worth it. The fish was crispy and fresh, just how fish should be, and the chips were fresh cut and delicious.”
Excellent reviews: 291 out of 729 reviews
So there we have it, next time you’re after the most delicious fish or crispy chip, check out any of the chippies in our list above. Enjoy.
