People have been pulling out their own teeth because the city’s dentists are at full capacity.
Councillor Amanda Grimshaw told a committee last year that she was horrified when discussing dentistry with a group of women in Brighton.
She said: “I heard one of them say she was pulling her own teeth out. I asked why and she said when she went to her practice, she was told she was deregistered.
“She had an infected tooth and had to present at the hospital emergency room, putting extra pressure on services at the hospital.
“When you’re from a ‘just managing’ household, the dentist is a luxury. Now we’re in an extended crisis for the poor and those on low incomes.
"What is the point in having free dental care when dentists are not accepting NHS patients.”

Healthwatch Brighton and Hove says the number of enquiries it receives from people struggling to find a dentist has increased by 270 per cent in less than three years.
Between 2019 and 2021, the number of NHS dental practices in the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) fell from 184 to 168.
So as people struggle to get the help they need, The Argus has put together a list of all the dentists in Brighton and Hove, and if they are accepting new patients.
