A pub manager has spoken of her excitement amid plans to open a new site to replace an old Wetherspoon this week.

The Royal George is set to welcome its first customers later this week as it takes over from The Cliftonville Inn in Hove which closed in March.

Ahead of the opening, manager Claudia Hosgood has offered an insight into what the George Street pub will be like.

Claudia, who is co-managing the pub with named licensee Aimee O’Reilly, said: “We are excited to take it on, in Hove there’s not a lot of late-night venues so we want to be the big venue in the area.

“It will be traditional in terms of the food and drink, we want to keep things local and people seem to love local products.

“There’s been a lot of interest, everyone has been popping their heads in and asking questions. Hopefully it will be a good place for a drink.”

The pub will take over the venue left empty by the Cliftonville Inn which was put up for sale and later closed in March.

Alterations have been made to the bar including redecorations and moving the bar to the centre of the venue.

Claudia added that the bar would have a “shabby chic” feel to it and would serve a range of drinks as well as food.

Licence changes were made in June ahead of the planned opening this week. The pub will serve alcohol from 9am until 1am on Friday and Saturday and until 12.30am from Sunday to Thursday.

The new pub will be run by Indigo, a chain of local bars which owns sites such as Molly Malone’s on West Street and The Wick Inn in Hove.

The Royal George is set to open on Thursday, August 10, but could open earlier in the week depending on renovation works.
