Brighton's most dangerous neighbourhoods have been named in new crime statistics with one area having six times more than the city’s average.

Statistics for Brighton and Hove found that 25,291 crimes were reported in the city in 2022, marking the highest figures since before the Covid pandemic.

However, a breakdown of the figures by area found that over half of the crimes reported were in just five of the city’s neighbourhoods.

North Laine and The Lanes was found to have just under a third of the total crimes reported in the city with 7,909 offences in 2022.

The statistics worked out at 624 crimes reported for every 1,000 people living in the area, an over 500 per cent increase on the city average of 103.

The top three most dangerous neighbourhoods in Brighton and Hove according to the figures were North Laine and The Lanes, St James’s Street and Queen’s Park (210 crimes per 1,000 people) and Brunswick (140 crimes per 1,000 people).

The statistics from crimerate.co.uk also found that violence and sexual offences were the most common crimes reported in the city as a whole, followed by anti-social behaviour and public order offences.

Wider figures also show that Brighton and Hove has the most crimes reported of anywhere in Sussex.

Similarly, Fiveways, West Blatchington and Hollingbury were found to have the lowest crime rates of anywhere in the city.

Only 220 crimes were reported in Hollingbury in 2022, accounting for 0.9% of crimes in the city.

Crime rates rose in 2022 compared to previous years, with only 23,307 crimes reported in 2021.

The figures for 2022 were the second highest since 2016 with the highest figures coming in 2019.
