International superstar Fatboy Slim celebrates his 60th birthday today.
The Praise You DJ, whose real name is Norman Cook, marked the occasion in style over the weekend with a birthday bash at his beachfront home in "Millionaires’ Row" in Hove.
Around 180 guests are understood to have been invited to the house party, where Norman himself is believed to have performed before a fireworks display at midnight.
A plane carrying a birthday banner, which read “Happy Birthday Norm”, was spotted in the skies above the city as the party got under way on Saturday night.
Originally from Bromley in neighbouring Kent, Norman is credited for popularising the “big beat” genre in the 1990s.
He also holds the Guinness World Record for releasing the most top 40 singles under different names, as Fatboy Slim, 80s band Beats International, acid jazz band Freak Power and as one half of electric duo Pizzaman.
Last year, Norman marked 20 years since his famous Big Beach Boutique gig on Brighton seafront, which saw 250,000 people pack the beach for the free event.
Norman has repeatedly spoken of his love of Brighton, his adopted home, and said: “Whenever I play in Brighton, I feel like I’m just playing to my friends at a house party because I feel comfortable with it.
“I love the city and the city seems to love me. To be accepted and respected in your home like this is really beautiful and it really works for me.”
His love for the city has shone through his Big Beach Cafe at Hove Lagoon, his support for Brighton-based hospice charity Martlets - as an ambassador and his sponsorship for the upcoming Shaun the Sheep art trail - and through backing the refurbishment of the Hippodrome in Middle Street, where he hopes to perform when it reopens.
He said of the Hippodrome: “So many people could have lived in Brighton for 25 years and never set foot in here. They might have never known what a precious gem we have.
“I’m hoping that any planning issues will be smoothed out. It would be a tragedy for it to have got this far and then not get over the line.”
Norman is showing no signs of slowing down, with a range of gigs planned across Europe and America over the next few months.
