A trial run of temporary traffic restrictions outside three schools is to be put in place from September.

The School Street restrictions will run from September 4 to March 4 at Swiss Gardens Primary School, Shoreham, Arundel CE Primary School and Thomas A Beckett Infant School, Worthing.

They will prohibit vehicles from entering the road directly at the school gates at drop-off and pick-up times.

The idea is to increase the confidence of parents and children to walk, cycle, skate and scoot to school.

The decision to start the trial run was taken by Joy Dennis, cabinet member for highways and transport, on West Sussex County Council.

An Experimental Traffic Regulation Order will be in place at the schools until the trial ends.

The council will also look into whether to introduce School Streets elsewhere in the county.

A report from Matt Davey, assistant director for highways, transport and planning, said that galvanised posts would be installed showing when and where the restrictions would be in place, with each site being monitored to see how many drivers ignore or comply with them.

Mr Davey added: “After the trial period has ended, before a scheme is made permanent, all data for each site will be reviewed and presented to the cabinet member who will decide if a scheme is made permanent, amended or removed.

“If a decision is made to make the scheme permanent, the scheme will be advertised as  a Traffic Regulation Order.”
