Home Office immigration enforcement officers were spotted with police in the city centre as they carried out a search for illegal workers.
Their vans were parked in Russell Place, near Churchill Square, on Wednesday evening at around 6.15pm.
There were two vans and one police car, however The Argus understands that following a search of a business nearby they did not find anyone working illegally.
Enforcement visits are led by tip-offs from the public and intelligence gathered by the Home Office.
A spokesman for the Home Office said: "Illegal working causes untold harm to our communities, cheating honest workers out of employment, putting vulnerable people at risk, and defrauding the public purse.
"The government is tackling illegal immigration and the harm it causes by removing those with no right to be in the UK."
