Brighton MP Caroline Lucas has backed calls to save a community pub after it was revealed that it faces closure.

Ms Lucas said that the response to the news “speaks volumes” to the importance of The Bevy in Bevendean after the news broke that there were only two months to save the pub.

The community pub, the only of its kind on an estate in the UK, is now rallying community members to help get behind the “special” site.

Following the news, the Green MP said: “The people of our city are rightly proud of the Bevy, which is a wonderful and hugely valued community hub.

“Whilst it’s just outside of my constituency, many of my constituents frequent and love this special place. Many also benefit from its use as a community asset and would be devastated to see it close.

“I’ve contacted The Bevy team to see if there is anything I can do to help but in the meantime, I'd encourage anyone who can to chip in and support them – that could include popping in for a drink or some delicious food, of course!

The Bevy held a public meeting last weekend to encourage pub users to get involved in saving the pub including through donations, volunteering or hiring the venue.

Pub bosses previously admitted that the site had “never really turned a profit” and that the site was losing around £3,000 a month.

However, following an outpouring of public support, the committee behind the pub shared that the felt “optimistic” that the pub could be saved.

As well as a pub, The Bevy acts as a community hub which hosts a seniors night as well as clubs for families.

The pub was most recently one of the stops on the Baton of Hope relay which took place in Brighton this week.
