A new restaurant is set to open its doors in the city centre after taking over an old shoe shop.

Island Poke, specialising in selling the Hawaiian fish dish poke bowl, will be opening in West Street in Brighton in the near future.

The restaurant, which boasts over 50,000 combinations with “build your own” options, will take over the unit formerly housing the Vans store which closed around six months ago.

Large advertising images have been placed in the windows of the unit as works begin inside to create the store.

Messages on the boards read “Aloha, Brighton”.

Island Poke first opened in 2016 in London after founder James Porter got a taste for the dish in California and Hawai’i.

The restaurant serves poke bowls as well as bao buns, and includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Poke bowls are traditionally served with diced cured raw fish with a mix of vegetables and sauces.

Island Poke also serves versions with chicken and tofu, among other options.

The restaurant also prides itself on sustainability with compostable bowls and has stopped selling plastic-bottled drinks.

Island Poke will open in West Street in August.
