A free photography exhibition exploring mental health has launched on the seafront with the backdrop of the West Pier.

The Brighton and Hove Camera Club has unveiled its latest series of photographs showcasing the topic, which was shot with the help of Sussex Neuroscience at the University of Sussex.

A total of 42 photographers came together to create pictures which best illustrated the theme of mental health, whether that be personal or topical. The pictures on display range from good health to the challenges of mental illness.

The photographs are mounted on pebble-filled pillars on Brighton beach near The Grand hotel, and is free for all to enjoy over the summer months.

Maggi Tillotson, president of the camera club, said: "Our members were stimulated by the challenge of making images covering such a broad but increasingly relevant issue.

"There can be very few of us who are not touched by this at some point in our life: this show gives us the chance to reflect on how different people cope."

Dr Ruth Staras, programme manager at Sussex Neuroscience, said: "As neuroscientists we hope to help raise awareness about mental health, and how we can all do something positive to help ourselves and each other, whether this is through research and education, healthcare, or our own day to day actions.

"We are really grateful for the amazing talent and range of interpretations that Brighton and Hove Camera Club members have contributed to the exhibition.”

The exhibition kicked off with a launch event on Tuesday, 20 June on the by the pillars, as the wide range of pictures were unveiled for the first time.

A poster at the exhibition invited viewers to reflect on the images, which included portraits, abstracts and even landscapes, and "raise awareness of how an understanding of the health of our brains and minds can help to improve our quality of life."

It forms part of the British Neuroscience Association Festival of Neuroscience which took place in Brighton earlier this year.
