Two Sussex attractions have ranked in a list of top heritage coastal sights in the country.

The list, created by the Seaside Heritage network, reveals the top 20 seaside experiences in the UK.

Historic Volk’s Electric Railway in Brighton has made the ranking, as well as Art Deco building the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.

A spokesman for the Seaside Heritage Network said: “The British seaside is a special place, shaped by the enjoyment of generations.

“Where the coast conjures up images of high cliffs, windswept views, wildlife and nature, the seaside is a human landscape dedicated to pleasure and fun.”

The top 20 list, nominated by the public, is a way to “celebrate the variety” that British coasts have to offer, the spokesman said.

Now, the network is asking for votes to whittle the ranking down even further to the top 10.

Brighton and Hove City Council has encouraged residents to vote for its Volks Electric Railway.

Phil Lucas, who works at the railway, said: “As the oldest working electric railway in the world, we’ve been transporting passengers along Brighton’s beautiful seafront since 1883.

“Travelling in the perfectly preserved cars takes you back to the Victorian era of innovation and ingenuity. It’s a one-off seaside experience.”
