Seven of the city’s public toilets have reopened in time for the summer season.

Public toilets across Brighton and Hove opened their doors today, albeit with temporary reduced hours.

The sites that reopened today are Blakers Park, Easthill Park, Greenleas, Hove Cemetery South, Queen’s Park, Stanmer Village, Vale Park and Wild Park.

The toilets will initially be open from 9am to 4pm, with the city council aiming to extend opening hours at some point in the future.

The move comes after the former Green-led administration initially planned to close almost half the city’s public toilets and charge for others in an effort to fill a multi-million-pound budget black hole.

In an exclusive interview with The Argus, new council leader Bella Sankey said: “We think that public toilets are absolutely essential to a city like Brighton and Hove for our residents and our visitors.

“It will always be a priority of ours to keep them open, keep them clean and refurbish them where money allows so we retain that really important public service for people.

“We were also proud to stop the closure of more toilets last February when the Green administration proposed to close or start charging for our toilets.”

Earlier this year, toilets on King’s Esplanade in Hove were reopened in time for summer.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, MP for Brighton Kemptown, said Labour was “keeping our promise” to open public toilets across the city.

The reopening comes as some residents took to social media to express their frustration about some public toilets across the city remaining closed.

One said: “If the council don’t hurry up and get the public toilets reopened, especially in the parks, I will have no choice but to start relieving myself in the streets in protest.

“The fact that the public toilets in all the city’s parks are shut is not only a joke, but an absolute disgrace.”

In response, another user suggested: “S**t in the sea and save Southern Water the trouble.”
