A Sussex beach has been ranked as one of the best in the country as thousands flock to the coast to enjoy the sunshine.

Rottingdean was among 20 of the UK’s “greatest beaches, for seaside perfection without the crowds” in a list compiled by the Telegraph.

Travel writer Tracey Davies said that Rottingdean is the perfect place to “escape Brighton’s crowds”.

She said: “Tucked under chalk cliffs, the pebble beach is quieter and a lovely place to swim, but I mostly love it for its celebrity history.

“In the late 1930s, the village’s Tudor Court Hotel was the Chateau Marmont of Sussex. A summer retreat for Hollywood stars like Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Errol Flynn and Cary Grant, who’s said to haunt the bar of the Rottingdean Club.”

She also recommended a trip to Smugglers Fish and Chip Bar in Rottingdean High Street for “crispy batter and proper chips doused in salt and vinegar”.

While only one beach from Sussex made the list, several seaside resorts in South West England were ranked highly, including Pedn Vounder and Polzeath in Cornwall and Par in the Isles of Scilly.

It comes as a recent study found Brighton beach was the most popular in the UK, based on views on social media site TikTok.
