A man arrested after another man was found dead by the side of the road has been released on bail.

Enquiries are continuing after a 64-year-old was pronounced dead at around 12.40am in Clayton Hill near Hassocks on Thursday, May 18.

A 59-year-old from Hove was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop but now police have released the man pending further investigations.

Police officers arrived at Poynings Drive in Hove at around 11am yesterday and took pictures of the underside of a taxi.

Forensic officers were also spotted at the scene and the taxi was taken away at around 4pm.

The road in Clayton Hill was closed for a time on Thursday morning, with enquiries ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the man’s death.

A police spokeswoman previously said: “Officers attended Clayton Hill around 12.40am on Thursday, May 18, after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man found by the side of the road.

“He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, including the possibility the man was involved in a collision with a vehicle.

“They would particularly like to speak to anyone who may have captured relevant dash cam footage in the vicinity of Clayton Hill.”
