This is the moment firefighters rushed to put out a fire after a car burst into flames in a busy high street.

Tyres exploded and thick black smoke rose into the sky as three fire engines responded to the drama on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze in Lewes High Street near the Lewes Old Grammar School's Mead House.

The road was blocked to cars by a fire engine while emergency services fought the fire, which was shooting out of the windows and petrol cap of the green Volkswagen Golf.

The Argus understands the car caught fire while being driven down the road.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said no one was hurt.

This comes just days after a van caught fire in Lewes High Street near the War Memorial.
