The city’s only black-owned bookshop has opened in its new home after facing closure earlier this year.
Afrori Books was forced to leave its site in Kensington Street, Brighton, after owner Carolynn Bain learned the shop’s rent would quadruple on April 1.
The costs were “simply not affordable” for Carolynn and meant her business was without a home and risked collapse.
But months of searching for a new site, Afrori found a home in the Brighthelm Centre, in North Road, and moved in on May 6.

Carolynn previously told The Argus: “It has been a really difficult time and there have been a lot of tears in the last few months.
“I guess now we are still crying, but they are tears of joy.”
The book shop opened following the murder of George Floyd in America in 2020 and has since become the UK’s biggest supplier of books by black authors.
“We are more than just a bookshop - we are a safe space for Brighton’s black community,” Carolynn said.
