The Met Office has warned buildings could be damaged by lightning strikes and flooding as it issues a yellow warning for the region.
Sussex could be hammered by a thunderstorm from 11am this morning, according to latest reports from the national weather service.
Homeowners and drivers have been told to take precautions as lightning and hail storms batter the county.
It has warned of power cuts and other vital services, with people warned to "seek shelter" while the storm is overheaad.
Between 11am and 10pm, the Met Office has said it is "very likely" that "heavy showers and thunderstorms will develop".
The warning was issued shortly before 9.30am this morning by the weather service, which has shared advice for people who find themselves caught out by the storm.
Drivers should choose main roads and drive slower, while those outside at the time should "avoid water and find a low-lying open place that is a safe distance from trees, poles or metal objects."

Forecasts from the Met Office show heavy showers moving over the county later this evening, at around 8pm.
Trains and buses also have the potential to be disrupted by the weather event.
