Steyning: King's coronation celebrated in Sussex village

Steyning, around five miles north of Shoreham, celebrated the King's coronation in style yesterday.

The town, nestled in the South Downs, saw hundreds take to its streets to ring in the new King.

Classic cars and classy attire were on show at the party, which took place in and around the High Street.

It was taken over by regal festivities and Union Flag toting revellers wanting to celebrate the coronation in the quaint town.

The event was organised by the chairman of the visitor and tourism committee in Steyning, Russell Barnes, who wanted to celebrate the coronation with "something a bit different."

He said: "We wanted to put something on for the coronation and decided to deviate from the typical street party.

"It was a throwback to the past with an opportunity to showcase some amazing vehicles."

The high street and main car park were pedestrianised for the day, as numerous stalls and attractions were set up.

This included a miniature railway, which - technically - marked the first railway line in the town since 1966.

Russell added: "We've encouraged so many people to come to the town and enjoy the independent businesses we have to offer.

"We only have around 6,000 people living here and it felt like the majority turned up at some point.

"Everyone had such a great day.

"It has been a real success and I really enjoy putting on events which other people enjoy."

Russell's role in the town is entirely voluntary, on top of his day-job as an architect, and he said none of today's event would have been possible if not for a dedicated team running the day's proceedings.
