The annual dog ban on beaches has come into forces across the county.

A range of bathing beaches across Sussex ban dogs from May 1 until September 30 to keep the beaches “clean, safe and accessible”.

The ban includes Brighton’s central beach and many other popular sites in the county.

Dog owners are also reminded to keep their four-legged friends on a lead when walking on the promenades alongside the banned areas.

Dogs are banned from the following beaches until September 30:

  • Bognor – from Park Road to Gloucester Road 
  • Brighton – central beach
  • Eastbourne - main resort beaches from the pier to the Wish Tower
  • Felpham – from Canning Road to Felpham Sailing Club 
  • Goring –between the boat launch ramp in line with Seafield Avenue and the launch ramp at Worthing Sailing Club
  • Hastings – from harbour arm to the pier, and from Warrior Square to the Royal Victoria Hotel
  • Littlehampton – from East Pier to Norfolk Road
  • Seaford - from Edinburgh Road to West View
  • Worthing – from Heene Road to Splashpoint

A spokeswoman for Arun District Council said: “Dog owners who are seen to be walking their dog on beaches with restrictions or on the promenades off lead will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

“Our four-legged friends are welcome on other stretches of our coastline all year round.”

There is also a summer restriction on horses, which are not allowed on any beach in Arun District from 10am to 6pm from May 1 to September 30. 

“If you do want to ride your horse on the beach outside these times, be aware the shingle sea defences may make access difficult,” said the spokeswoman.
