Construction work is well underway at a new seafront hotel as the new nine-storey structure takes shape.

Excavations began in September last year on the new 221-room venue at the back of the Hilton Brighton Metropole in Cannon Place.

The old building, used as a conference space, was almost entirely torn down and the concrete structure of its replacement looks to be nearing completion.

The former building was used for events including The Snowman ball and pantomimes.

But it seems the new hotel is welcome among city residents, with one person saying via Facebook: “It actually looks good and will fit in well there. Far better than the ugly conference centre that has been there for years.”

Planning permission was granted for the building in 2021 on the condition that site owner Topland spends £50,000 on public art for the area.

Independent councillor Tony Janio said the artwork should be “original” and that he would “like to see a bonkers piece if art down there, so when people walk by from Churchill Square, they think ‘isn’t that unusual. This is why we’ve come to Brighton and Hove’.”

Topland is expected to lease the new Cannon Place hotel to Irish company Dalata for 35 years, while Hilton Hotels will continue to run the Metropole.
