Lifeboats have been scrambled to a pier after reports of people in the water amid strong winds.
The lifeboats from Newhaven and Shoreham were launched at around 4pm to attend the incident near Brighton Palace Pier.
A search and rescue helicopter has also been spotted helping at the scene of the incident.
A spokeswoman for Newhaven RNLI said: "Newhaven Lifeboat has been tasked at 15.59 this afternoon following reports of persons requiring assistance near Brighton."
Sussex Police and the Coastguard have all been approached for comment.
