This is the shocking moment a driver hit a traffic cone while a police officer was reopening a lane on a busy road.

Dashcam footage shows how PC Tom Van Der Wee was clearing traffic cones when the incident took place.

He shared a video of the SUV hitting a cone while he was removing them from the A27, near Fontwell.

In the clip, filmed from inside a nearby police car, the officer can be seen putting his hands out in dismay after the "near miss" yesterday.

PC Van Der Wee, from the Sussex roads policing unit, said the driver of the Volvo XC90 did not stop at the scene or apologise.

He has since paid a visit to "hand deliver" a letter to the unnamed motorist who has been reported for careless driving.

Posting the video on Twitter, the policeman urged motorists to "look beyond their bonnets".

"To be honest, this is a pretty regular occurrence when we’re working within lane closures at road traffic collisions.

"People ignore the blue lights, cones, signs and people in the carriageway."

The officer was taking in cones after an earlier lane closure when the black SUV swerved across the road.

PC Van Der Wee said the motorist ignored "two advance warning signs, a 150-metre long cone taper into a lane closure, a marked police vehicle with an arrow and lights, an unmarked police vehicle with the same, and a marked police bike".

Video shows how the car smashed into a bright orange reflective cone sending it flying through the air, before driving off afterwards.

PC Van Der Wee posted the shocking video, captured on his patrol car's dashcam, to his Twitter account with almost 20,000 followers.

And he said it wasn't the first time he had encountered this kind of driving.

Author Keith Campion replied to his post saying the driver would have been "mortified to have that immediately uploaded on social media".

But PC Van Der Wee replied saying the car was only 20 seconds away from leaving his family mortified.

PC Van Der Wee said he wanted to share the video in order to encourage motorists to consider how they drive and highlight how dangerous his job could be.
