A scooter made famous by The Who has been restored to its former glory by a team of dedicated mods - in time for the Easter Mod Weekender.

Mod and scooter enthusiast Aaron White has given the original 1964 GS Vespa a new lease of life after it was found "lying in pieces" in The Who frontman Roger Daltrey's barn at his home in Burwash.

It featured in The Who's 1996 Quadrophenia Tour when it was ridden on stage by guest star Billy Idol as mod character Ace Face.

The newly restored scooter appeared on stage again this year - at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, March 26 for a charity gig with Roger Daltrey ahead of its visit to Brighton for the upcoming Mod Weekender.

Aaron, who runs the South Coast Customs repair centre, said: "It was the first time Roger had seen the scooter.

"He couldn’t thank me enough. He was absolutely mind-blown with how good it looks. It looks exactly how it did on tour, except it works."

Aaron was enlisted to repair the scooter by Brighton mod Jim Deans.

Jim was speaking with Des Murphy, Roger's son-in-law, when Des said something "needs to be done" with the restoration of the scooter.

Aaron said: "Jim put out a message on our WhatsApp group, asking if someone knew how to help restore the scooter.

"I didn't know it was The Who's until I offered to help."

Aaron travelled to Burwash with Jim and Des to take a closer look at the Vespa.

"It was lying in pieces, and there wasn't a single bit which wasn't rusty. Even the engine was in pieces." he said.

Jim added: "It turned out to be a jigsaw puzzle which would take the shape of a Vespa 160GS."

On Sunday, April 9, the scooter will take to the streets of Brighton for the first time as part of the annual Easter Mod Weekender. Hundreds of mods flock to the city for a celebration of their culture.

Aaron said: "It is the most sought-after scooter, and I can't wait to bring it to the Mecca of mods."

It will be ridden from The Volks, a regular haunt for Brighton mods, to Concorde 2 in Madeira Drive for the Mod Aid charity concert, which is raising money for Sussex Homeless Support and the Teenage Cancer Trust, which Roger Daltrey keenly supports.

People can have their picture taken on top of the scooter, wearing a classic mod parka jacket for £5 this Sunday.
