Residents say they are shocked at learning a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police were called to an address in Cowley Drive, Woodingdean, at roughly 5pm yesterday (March 30).
Paramedics treated a woman at the scene before she was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
A 47-year-old man from Newhaven has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody at this time.
People living in homes near to the scene said they were shocked to hear what had happened.
“I’ve been told that someone saw a person running from the house covered in blood. They said he was running to a neighbour’s house or that he just got on a bus,” said one neighbour.
Another said: "I got home at about quarter to seven and saw a police van and police car parked in the road.
"I then saw a few officers, less than ten, running to and from the vehicles and the house.
"I'm not concerned for me, just concerned for the welfare of the people that live there."
Two police officers remained at the property yesterday, with one at the front door and another in front of the garage attached to the home.
One other neighbour told The Argus: “They’re a nice family in that house but usually just keep themselves to themselves. I see the bloke out regularly and we always say hello.”
Forensics visited the address.
Police confirmed emergency services were called to Cowley Drive shortly before 5pm on Thursday (30 March) after concerns were raised for the welfare of a woman.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell said: “This is a fast-moving investigation and the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
“There is not believed to any wider risk to the public and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident at this time.
“Anyone with information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting Operation Bradwall.”
