Forensic officers were called to the scene of an alleged attempted murder.
Officers went to Cowley Drive in Woodingdean after a woman was taken to hospital with “serious injuries”.
A 47-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
One resident who lives nearby said: "I got home at about quarter to seven and saw a police van and police car parked in the road.
"I then saw a few officers, less than ten, running to and from the vehicles and the house.
"I'm not concerned for me, just concerned for the welfare of the people that live there."

Officers have been spotted stationed around the property as investigations continue.
Another resident said they saw a family member crying shortly after the incident at around 5pm on Thursday, March 30.
In a statement, Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell said: “This is a fast-moving investigation and the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
“There is not believed to any wider risk to the public and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident at this time.
“Anyone with information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting Operation Bradwall.”
