A road where buses have been controversially diverted will be closed until further notice because of a "severe" water leak.

Brighton and Hove City Council said last night that Upper North Street in Brighton will be closed from 9am today until further notice for emergency repair work.

It comes just two months after traffic was diverted along the street due to the Western Road improvement works.

The council tweeted: “Upper North Street will be closed from 9am until further notice for emergency repair work.

“A severe water leak has caused significant damage to the road.

“Buses are being diverted via Seven Dials. We're really sorry for any inconvenience.”

The diversion was met with uproar from local residents when it was announced. They called the diversion "unsafe".

The flooding was first noticed on March 15 by a resident.

Brighton and Hove Buses tweeted a day later saying it was unable to use Upper North Street because of the water leak.
