Shocked residents have told of the horrifying moment a man was "stabbed in the head" in a street.

Residents in Landsdowne Road and Wallace Avenue in Worthing described the moment they heard screaming from a man who was stabbed "several times”, outside a home in the quiet residential street.

He stumbled on to a doorstep, where several pools of blood formed as he cried out for help.

A witness said: “I was looking out the window, at about twenty past nine, when I saw a group of about six or seven lads running down Lansdowne Road.

“They shot across the road, and I thought they were trying to rob houses.”

The resident said they dialled 999 right away to tell police there was a group causing trouble in the area, but the call quickly became a lot more serious.

The victim was described as being in his early 30s. The witness said he was cornered against a fence and wall by a gang of people in the residential Worthing street.

They added: “I don’t think he was stabbed across the road, but I think they attacked him when they cornered him on the driveway.

“The group scarpered as soon as the lights turned on.”

The bloodied hand of the victim then reached up to the front window of a house, smearing blood over the glass as they cried for help.

“I thought, my God, somebody really needs help. You don’t really expect this on a Monday night, it’s supposed to be a nice area” they said.

The witness said the extent of his injuries was unclear due to the amount of blood, but they saw two stab wounds to his leg and one on his head.

Police investigators worked into the night, conducting door-to-door enquiries and taking pictures at the scene.

A spokesman for the the air ambulance said: “A helicopter from Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) was dispatched to Worthing on 27th March.

“Our crew arrived on scene at 21:58 where they worked with SECAmb and Sussex Police to help treat the patient. They then transported the patient to hospital by road.”
