Sussex residents who have made outstanding contributions to voluntary services, sport and industry are among those who have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Many of those named have offered their time and services for free to some of the county's charities.

Wendy Peek, from Hurstpierpoint, was shocked to hear she had been made an MBE for voluntary service to visually impaired children and young people.

She is the secretary for the charity Look Sussex, which offers support and information to visually impaired children and their families.

Mrs Peek's own son is visually impaired and she has volunteered for the charity for 16 years.

She said: "I was really surprised when I got the news. Even now I keep thinking 'Is it real?' "We are taking the children camping this weekend so it will be really nice to tell everybody on our trip."

Brighton resident Professor Gloria Laycock was made an OBE for services to crime policy.

Prof Laycock is director at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at the University College London (UCL).

She previously worked in the Home Office for over thirty years, of which almost twenty years was spent on research and development in the policing and crime prevention fields.

She has also recently been appointed as the director of the UCL Centre for Security and Crime Science.

Clay pigeon target shooter George Digweed was made an MBE for services to sport and charity.

Mr Digweed holds four world records and 15 world titles in his sport.

Sussex Police chief constable Martin Richards was also awarded the Queen's Police Medal.

Mr Richards, 48, has held the position since October 2007.

He joined the police service in 1982 and came to Sussex from Wiltshire Police, where he had been Chief Constable since 2004.

He said: "I see this as recognition of the work of numerous talented and committed colleagues with whom I've been lucky enough to work over the last 26 years, first in Warwickshire, then Avon and Somerset, then Wiltshire and now, finally, here in Sussex where I have the privilege of leading more than 6,000 people who are committed to catching criminals and cutting crime.

"At a personal level I would like to dedicate this honour to my mother and my late father, primary school head and parish priest respectively.

Between them they have ensured that a real sense of public service guides all that I try to do."
