Pints of Guinness in Brighton are some of the most expensive in the UK, a study claims.

The city was found to have the second most costly in the country behind only London.

With prices coming in at an average of £4.90 in Brighton pubs, the popular St Patrick’s Day drink will set you back more than in Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge.

The survey, commissioned by Creditfix ahead of the celebrations today, blamed price rises on inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.

Layla Johnson, regional manager at Creditfix, said: “It’s easy for big holidays and celebrations often associated with drinking alcohol to end up costing a lot more than anticipated, especially amid the cost-of-living crisis.

“It’s no surprise that inflation has pushed up the price of Guinness, one of the most beloved pints in the world, just like it has other beverages.

"It can be all too easy to dip into your overdraft or credit card to pay for an extra round, but it’s important to budget properly for any social activities, and be mindful of how much you’re spending this St Patrick’s Day - especially if you’re celebrating in one of the more expensive cities.”

At £5.30, London was the only city to have a more expensive pint than Brighton. At the other end of the scale, pints of the stout in Swindon and Stoke were found to be considerably cheaper at around £3.50.

Brighton Guinness was measured at around 18 per cent above the national average price of £4.14 a pint.

The survey was conducted by taking an average from pub chains across the UK including Wetherspoons, Greene King and Hungry Horse.
