A woman was presented with an award and recognised by a Dragons’ Den star for her small business.
Lynda Nurse, from Shoreham, owns EcoOctopus, a business selling eco conscious jewellery and textiles.
She was recognised by Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis, who presented her with an award at the retail entrepreneur’s small business sunday competition.
This is a nationally acclaimed award given to successful small businesses, providing ongoing support to those who win the prize.
Lynda’s jewellery products are made from copper stripped from waste electrical cables, glass washed up in the sea, home grown herbs and flowers, recycled textiles and acorn shells.
She also uses discarded bottle top lids, old marbles and old pottery and loves what she calls “turning trash into treasure”.
The majority of materials used are recycled, organic or reclaimed by Lynda herself.
Other materials are carefully sourced to ensure environmental and ethical compatibility.
These creations are made with love and make my heart sing.
“I was absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award and could not believe it when I received confirmation that I had been successful,” said Lynda.
“I have worked extremely hard on the business, overcoming significant health issues, Covid and the cost of living crisis. It is terrific to gain Theo’s support.”
Lynda set up EcoOctopus, an online only business, while on a career break.
She had originally planned to take a six-month sabbatical before returning to her day job, but then Covid hit and her plans changed.
EcoOctopus started to take off as customers were suddenly unable to purchase goods on the high street.
“Online was the only option and word soon started to spread,” said Lynda.
Lynda now has a steady stream of customers and her with products are sent all over the world.
Lynda said: “It has been a roller-coaster ride filled with obstacles, but I stood tall, conquered and absolutely love what I do.”
As well as selling online, Lynda tours all over the country, selling her jewellery, bunting and throws at numerous fairs.
She will also be exhibiting as part of the Brighton Festival and Shoreham’s Adur Art Trail.
Those interested in Lynda's creations can visit her website on www.EcoOctopus.co.uk. She is @ecooctopus on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
