A woman has been arrested for assault after an incident in the city centre.
It happened in Pavilion Buildings, off North Street, Brighton, at 3.15am today.
This morning, a police cordon was in place around a pool of blood on the pavement.
A scene of crimes officer was seen taking samples of the blood.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "At 3.15am on Thursday, February 23, police responded to a report of an assault between a man and woman.
"Officers attended the scene where they located a man with injuries to his face. He was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening or life-changing injuries. The man currently remains in hospital."
A 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody at this time.
The spokesman added: "There will be heightened police presence in the area while officers conduct their enquiries."
