Residents have been left without power after a fire in a high rise. 

People had to evacuate Grove Court in The Drive, Hove yesterday evening while nine pumps from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service put out the blaze. 

One resident told The Argus: "It was a huge explosion. 

"I was just watching TV when I heard a loud bang and saw a bright light outside my window. 

"We are going to have to live on torches for now."

Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service were also at the scene.

The ambulance were tending to one casualty.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to reports of a domestic dwelling fire on, The Drive, Hove at 7.44pm. 

“Seven pumps were called, supported by one aerial ladder platform and five officers from both West Sussex and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

“One casualty has been reported and left in the care of the ambulance service.

“The fire was discovered in the electrical intake room in the basement. The cause of the fire was accidental.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
