Plans to amalgamate two seafront hotels into one have been submitted by a new hotel group.

Guest Leisure wants to convert and restore The Granville Hotel and The Cecil, between 123 and 126 King's Road, Brighton, into one boutique hotel with a spa and bar and restaurant.

If approved the plans would see “alterations to facilitate the amalgamation of two hotels including erection of two-storey rear extension to form spa and first floor rear extension to form plant enclosure, new hard landscaping, boundary walls and railings to front elevation, internal alterations to layout and associated reinstatement and restoration works”.

The hotel would have 33 rooms, with over ten per cent of rooms able to interconnect for families.

In planning documents the hotel company said it had chosen the "unique site in Brighton for its prime location on the seafront" with views out to the sea and the old pier.

It said: “We were drawn to its historical character and distinctive architecture, that showcases the quintessential frontages of Brighton.

“Our proposed development seeks to restore and enhance these heritage qualities and details, whilst reviving the site with selective contemporary, to include a new food and beverage and spa facilities offer to both hotel guests and the public.”

The group said work to consolidate the four properties that make up the two hotels will be “sympathetic” to the “original, partially listed, fabric”.

The buildings at 125-126 Kings Road are Grade II listed.

The bar and restaurant will be on the hotel’s lower ground floor which will be available to the public as well as hotel guests.

There are also plans to create a “luxury outdoor dining space” that will provide diners with sea views.

To the rear of the site, the new spa building, is proposed to front on to Queensbury Mews while the area behind 123 King’s Road and the existing pub will house hotel staff facilities.

There is also a focus on making the new hotel more accessible and to source products and produce from local suppliers to support the area’s economy.

Planning documents said: “The client’s ambition for 123-126 Kings Road is to deliver a bespoke boutique hotel and spa worthy of its prominent sea front location.

“The scheme will focus on upgrading and revitalising the existing historic fabric to the sea front and mews elevation, along with a new spa addition to the rear. 123-126 King's Road is to be a flagship boutique hotel for the expanding Guest Leisure brand, a destination hotel of the highest quality.”
