Brighton is one of the top literary locations in the UK, a study has found.

The city ranked fifth in a list of top places for book lovers, beating places like Cardiff and the Lake District.

A study by holiday website holidaycottages.co.uk ranked the city for its “creative and culturally rich environment” and links with a plethora of authors such as Rudyard Kipling and Lewis Carroll.

A spokeswoman said: “Brighton and Hove is a city famed for its creative and culturally rich environment, so it makes sense that this seaside city is in the top five UK literary hot spots.

“If you time it just right, you might even catch the Brighton Festival – one of the largest and most established arts festivals in England, with events including live poetry and creative writing workshops.”

Among the works to have been set in Brighton include crime thriller Brighton Rock by Graham Greene and the Roy Grace detective series written by Peter James.
