A coastguard helicopter that was heard by many in the city last night was performing a training exercise, officials have confirmed.
Several people reported hearing the helicopter flying south over Brighton and towards Peacehaven at around 5.30pm last night.
The helicopter, which was from Lee-on-Solent, turned around near Newhaven and came back to Brighton by around 6pm.
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said: “The search and rescue helicopter CG175, based at Lee-on-Solent, is currently taking part in a training exercise in the area.”
